Hey Reader,
When a funding opportunity opens, the deadline can quickly become the focus. Teams rush madly to draft chapters, collect supporting documents and prepare budgets while trying to answer fundamental questions about the project at the same time.
That pressure is understandable, and with AI tools staff are producing what can look like a great application, but not necessarily a flash investment. Are you winning more using AI tools??
Strong investments reflect decisions that were made well before opportunities presented. Leaders understand the need they are trying to solve, have tested alternative responses and are confident the organisation can deliver IF/WHEN funding is approved.
Investment readiness matters
Funding assessors are not simply evaluating the quality of an application. They are considering whether the proposed investment is credible, achievable and represents good value.
That judgement is much easier when an organisation has already clarified the outcomes it is seeking, organised the supporting evidence, spoken to all those involved and identified delivery risks.
Good preparation also improves internal decision making. It gives executives and boards greater confidence that they are pursuing the right investment, rather than simply responding to the latest funding opportunity.
Five questions worth asking
Before committing significant effort to your next application, can you answer these questions:
- What outcome will this investment improve?
- Why is this needed now?
- What evidence supports our proposed approach?
- What are the risks if we get the money?
- Will we still proceed if external funding isn't available?
If these questions are difficult to answer, your priority may not be writing the application. It may be strengthening the investment behind it.

Funding follows good decisions
Over the past month we've written about organisational productivity and improving how important work gets done.
Funding is no different.
The strongest applications are usually the result of stronger preparation, clearer thinking and better organisational decisions long before drafting begins.
Grantus has helped organisations secure close to $0.5 billion in investment because we've always focused on strengthening the reason before strengthening the application.
Funding is the outcome of good organisational decisions.
Cheers, Simon.
